St. John's Creeper (Podranea Ricasoliana) Pink Trumpet Vine
The St. John's Creeper (Podranea ricasoliana), also known as the Pink Trumpet Vine, is a high-energy climber that brings a royal flush of color to the garden. Native to South Africa but perfectly adapted to the Indian climate, this vine produces large, terminal clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers in a stunning shade of lilac-pink with delicate red veins in the throat. Its glossy, deep green compound leaves provide a lush background for the blossoms, which appear in such abundance they can practically hide the foliage during peak season.
Light
▾
Loves full sun! For the most dramatic flowering display, it needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. It will grow in partial shade, but you will get more leaves and fewer of those iconic pink trumpets.
Watering
▾
Water regularly until established. Once it has a strong root system, it is surprisingly drought-tolerant. During the summer, water deeply once the top soil feels dry. Avoid keeping the soil "mucky," as it prefers well-drained conditions.
Soil & Fertilizer
▾
Thrives in almost any soil but performs best in nutrient-rich, loamy soil. Feed with a balanced organic fertilizer or compost once a month during the growing season (Spring to Autumn) to fuel its rapid expansion and heavy blooming.
Leggy Growth at the Base
▾
This is natural for older vines. To fix this, "tip prune" the ends of the branches regularly to encourage the plant to bush out lower down, or plant smaller shrubs at the base to hide the woody stems.
Frost Sensitivity
▾
In very cold parts of North India, the leaves may drop during a harsh winter. Don't worry—the plant usually resprouts vigorously as soon as the spring warmth returns.
