The Alocasia Frydek Variegated is one of the most tactile and visually striking aroids in cultivation. Known as the Green Velvet Alocasia, its deep green arrowhead leaves are covered in dense, fine trichomes — giving them a soft, matte, velvety surface unlike any other Alocasia. In the variegated form, pearly white and creamy sections are scattered across that dark velvet ground in patterns that shift from bold sectoral half-white to fine speckled distributions, with thick white veins running prominently through each leaf. Every leaf is different. A compact grower at 45–90 cm, it is a plant that rewards close attention.

💡 About the Velvet Surface Caused by microscopic trichomes — clean with a very soft damp cloth only. No rubbing, no leaf shine products. Both damage the texture permanently.

Bright indirect light — at least 6 hours daily. East or west-facing window is ideal. No direct harsh sun; it scorches the white sections and damages the velvet. A grow light at 12–14 hours works well indoors.

Watering

Allow the top 3–4 cm to dry before watering. Water thoroughly then empty the saucer. Filtered or rainwater preferred — tap water minerals cause brown tipping on white sections over time. Reduce in winter.

60–70% preferred. Use a humidifier or pebble tray. Mist in the morning only — water on the velvet surface overnight encourages fungal spotting. Keep away from AC vents and fans.

Growing Media

Well-draining aroid mix: 40% potting soil, 25% perlite, 20% orchid bark, 15% coco coir. pH 5.5–7.0. Repot every 1–2 years in spring, one pot size up. Always use a pot with drainage holes.

Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer. Apply to moist soil only. Flush soil every 3 months to prevent salt build-up. Stop feeding in winter.

🌱 Corms — Don't Throw These Away Small bulb-like corms at the soil base are baby plants. Leave them to grow or separate and pot individually once 1–2 cm wide. They carry the same variegation as the parent.

🍂 Winter Dormancy — Leaf Drop Is Normal Below 18°C the plant may drop all its leaves. The rhizome stays alive underground — reduce watering, stop feeding, keep warm. New shoots emerge reliably in spring. Do not discard the pot.

Brown Tips on White Sections

Yellow Leaves

Usually overwatering — let the top 3–4 cm dry and ensure good drainage. One leaf yellowing as a new one opens is normal leaf cycling. Widespread yellowing with soggy soil means root rot — unpot, trim black roots, repot in fresh mix.

Drooping Leaves

Check soil first — if dry, water immediately. If moist, check for cold drafts or root rot. Newly repotted plants droop for 1–2 weeks; resolves on its own.

Fungal Spots on Leaves

Water sitting on velvet in stagnant conditions. Mist morning only, improve airflow, treat with diluted neem oil. Remove badly affected leaves.

Spider Mites or Mealybugs
