Aristolochia Leuconeura
Aristolochia leuconeura — the White-Veined Pipevine — is a fast-growing, evergreen tropical climber that earns its place twice over: first with its striking foliage, and then with its flowers. The large, leathery, heart-shaped leaves carry bold lemon-yellow to creamy-white veins across a deep, glossy green — a pattern so vivid it reads like a foliage plant selectively bred for impact. Then the flowers arrive: small, pipe-shaped blooms in deep red-bronze, each one resembling a Dutchman's pipe or a curved saxophone, with an interior designed to temporarily trap and release insect pollinators. Native to the humid tropical forests of Central and South America, it climbs vigorously to 4–6 m with support and is fully at home in India's tropical and subtropical climate outdoors year-round.
Light
▾
Bright indirect light indoors — east or west-facing window is ideal. Outdoors, full sun to partial shade; tolerates more direct sun with adequate watering. In low light indoors, the yellow veining fades and growth becomes leggy. A minimum of 6 hours of bright light daily produces the best foliage.
Watering
▾
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged — allow only the top 2–3 cm to dry between waterings. Water more generously in warm weather and during active growth. Reduce in cooler months. Good drainage is essential — never let it sit in standing water.
Humidity
▾
60–80% preferred. Thrives in India's tropical outdoor climate without intervention. For indoor growing, use a humidifier or pebble tray. More humidity-tolerant and adaptable than most collector plants — one of its strengths as an indoor climber. Keep away from AC vents and heating sources.
Growing Media
▾
Rich, well-draining mix: 35% loamy soil or quality potting mix, 30% well-rotted compost, 20% perlite or coarse sand, 15% coco coir. pH 6.0–7.0. Repot every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger container. Provide a trellis, moss pole, or climbing frame — this vine twines actively and needs support to develop its full habit.
Feeding
▾
Balanced liquid fertilizer every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer. Apply to moist soil. A feed with elevated potassium in late summer encourages flowering on mature plants. Flush soil every 3 months. Stop feeding in winter.
Yellow Leaves
▾
Overwatering or cold temperatures. Ensure good drainage and allow only the top 2–3 cm to dry. If soil is consistently soggy, unpot, trim any rotted roots, and repot in fresh well-draining mix. Keep above 15°C — cold stress causes rapid yellowing.
Leggy Growth or Fading Veins
▾
Insufficient light. Move to a brighter position — a minimum of 6 hours of bright indirect light. Pinch growing tips to encourage bushier growth and provide or redirect the climbing support for a fuller, more structured habit.
Leaf Defoliation (Caterpillars)
▾
Outdoors, swallowtail butterfly larvae feed on the foliage — this is normal and desirable if you welcome butterflies. The plant regrows rapidly once larvae complete their cycle. If the defoliation is unwanted, remove caterpillars by hand and relocate them.
Spider Mites or Mealybugs
▾
Inspect leaf undersides and stem joints regularly. Spray with diluted neem oil or insecticidal soap every 5–7 days for 3 weeks. Good humidity and air circulation reduce pest pressure significantly.
Not Flowering
▾
Flowers appear only on older wood on mature plants — usually from year 2 onwards. Ensure the vine has strong support and is receiving adequate light. Prune lightly after each flush of growth to encourage branching; flowers emerge from the axils of mature stems, not new growth.
