Asplenium Antiquum ‘Victoria'
The Asplenium antiquum ‘Victoria’ is an elegant and structurally unique cultivar of the classic Bird’s Nest Fern. Named for its regal appearance, the 'Victoria' is distinguished by its long, upright, strap-like fronds that feature beautifully ruffled and wavy margins. These "tongue-like" leaves emerge from a central rosette, creating a dense, lush display of vibrant greenery.
Compared to other Bird's Nest varieties, ‘Victoria’ offers a softer, more textural look while maintaining the leathery, waxy leaf structure that makes Aspleniums so resilient. It is a slow-growing perennial that provides an immediate tropical feel to bathrooms, offices, or shaded balconies.
Light
▾Prefers moderate to bright indirect light. It can adapt well to low light conditions, making it perfect for indoor spaces. Keep it away from direct sunlight, which will quickly scorch the edges of the ruffled fronds and cause them to turn yellow.
Watering
▾Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. **Vital Warning:** Always water around the base of the plant into the soil. Never pour water into the "nest" (the central heart) of the fern, as this can trap moisture and cause the plant to rot from the inside out.
Soil & Potting
▾Requires an airy, moisture-retentive potting mix. A blend of coco-peat, perlite, and a small amount of charcoal or orchid bark works best. These ferns are epiphytic by nature and thrive when their roots have access to plenty of oxygen.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Feed once a month during the growing season (Spring and Summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Apply the fertilizer directly to the soil, ensuring it doesn't touch the fronds or the central rosette.
Maintenance & Cleaning
▾The glossy leaves can collect dust over time. Wipe them gently with a soft, damp cloth every few weeks to keep them shining and healthy. Prune away any older, yellowing fronds at the very base to maintain the plant's tidy, fountain-like shape.
Brown Leaf Margins
▾Usually caused by low humidity or tap water sensitivity. Increase ambient humidity by grouping plants or using a pebble tray. Try using filtered water if your tap water is chemically treated.
Soft, Black Center
▾A classic sign of "Heart Rot" from watering into the center of the rosette. Stop watering immediately and ensure the plant has better airflow around the base.
