Each cluster of flowers opens in soft yellow, deepens to a warm orange, and finally matures into a vivid, fiery scarlet-red, all at the same time on the same vine. Also known as Kock's Bauhinia or Climbing Bauhinia, this fast-growing tropical woody vine is native to Peninsular Malaysia and thrives beautifully in India's warm, humid climate. Its distinctive bilobed leaves — shaped like the classic Bauhinia "camel's foot" — add lush, textural interest even between flowering flushes. And those flushes? This vine blooms year-round, meaning there's never really an off-season.

Light

Watering

Use a rich, well-draining mix: 30–40% loamy garden soil, 20–30% well-rotted compost or FYM, 20–30% sand or perlite, and 10–20% vermicompost. Crucially, Bauhinia Coccinea needs slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.5) — avoid alkaline soils, which cause iron deficiency. Add neem cake or bone meal at planting for a healthy start.

Feed with a phosphorus-rich liquid fertilizer (10-30-20 or similar) every 2–3 weeks during the blooming season at half strength to support continuous flowering. Supplement with well-rotted compost or vermicompost every 4–6 weeks. A monthly dose of organic options like fish amino acid or panchagavya works beautifully for lush, sustained growth.

Bauhinia Coccinea is a vigorous woody climber and needs a strong support structure from early on — a sturdy trellis, wire mesh, pergola, or bamboo frame all work well. Train and tie new growth in your preferred direction while the stems are still young and flexible; once woody, they're much harder to redirect. The vine can reach up to 10 metres, so plan your support accordingly.
Pruning is key to keeping this plant at its best. Trim after each major flowering flush to remove spent growth, encourage denser branching, and promote the next round of blooms. Remove any weak, crossing, or damaged branches throughout the year. If grown in a pot, use a container of at least 12 inches with excellent drainage holes, and be prepared to size up as the plant establishes.
Watch for aphids and scale insects — inspect the undersides of leaves regularly. A fortnightly neem oil spray is an excellent organic preventive. In overly wet conditions, ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. Given the right conditions, this vine is remarkably self-sufficient and rewards you generously.
