The Blue Oil Fern (Microsorum thailandicum) is one of the most visually striking and rare ferns in the plant world, admired for its deep blue, metallic sheen that almost looks oil-painted. Native to Thailand, this slow-growing epiphytic fern is a true collector’s plant, prized not for flowers but for its unreal foliage colour.

Under bright, indirect light, the leaves display an intense blue-green iridescence, making it a standout in terrariums, shaded balconies, and premium indoor plant collections. Compact, calm, and sculptural, the Blue Oil Fern is perfect for plant lovers who value rarity and texture over fast growth.

Unlike common ferns, this species prefers stability, humidity, and patience—rewarding you with a living piece of botanical art.

Size Details

Size: 5-8 Inches (3-6 Leaves)

Care Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Light:

This plant thrives in bright indirect light, which means it needs a well-lit space without harsh direct sunlight. Ideal locations include east or north-facing windows, or spots near south or west-facing windows with filtered light through a sheer curtain to protect its foliage.

Water:

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering & ensure pots have drainage holes. Frequency may vary with season and light, roughly once every 5–10 days.

Growing Media:

30–40% Coco Coir/Peat Moss: Maintains consistent moisture without becoming soggy.
20–30% Perlite/Pumice: Improves aeration and prevents waterlogging.
20–30% Leaf Compost/Orchid Bark (fine): Mimics forest floor conditions and adds organic matter.
10–20% Vermicompost: Provides slow-release nutrients to support lush foliage.
Optional: A handful of horticultural charcoal to keep the mix fresh and prevent fungal issues.

Feeding & Fertilization:

Feed once every 4–6 weeks during active growth using a very diluted liquid fertilizer (¼ to ½ strength). Avoid heavy feeding—this fern prefers minimal nutrition. Stop feeding during winter.
