Coralbush (Jatropha Multifida)
The Coralbush (Jatropha multifida) is a botanical masterpiece that combines structural foliage with striking floral design. It is instantly recognizable by its large, deeply lobed, fan-like leaves that resemble delicate lace or filigree, earning it the nickname "Physic Nut." Rising above this intricate greenery are flat-topped clusters of brilliant coral-red flowers that look like miniature seafaring coral branches. Native to tropical America but incredibly hardy in India, the Coralbush is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant shrub that acts as a year-round focal point, offering an exotic, architectural aesthetic to any landscape or large patio container.
Light
▾
Thrives in full sun to light partial shade. To maintain its compact, bushy habit and ensure continuous flowering, at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight is recommended. In too much shade, the plant can become "leggy" as it stretches toward the light, and the signature coral blooms will be fewer.
Watering
▾
Moderate to low. Water deeply but allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry out completely before watering again. It is sensitive to "wet feet," so ensure your soil or pot has excellent drainage. During the monsoon, supplemental watering is rarely needed.
Soil & Fertilizer
▾
Prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. It is not picky about soil fertility and can grow even in poor soils. Feed once every 3 months with a balanced organic fertilizer to keep the foliage lush and the flower clusters vibrant.
Yellowing or Dropping Leaves
▾
This is usually a sign of overwatering. If the soil stays soggy, the roots cannot breathe. Reduce your watering frequency and ensure the drainage holes in your pot are not blocked.
Sticky Residue on Leaves
▾
Can be caused by aphids or mealybugs. These pests are attracted to the tender new growth. Treat with a spray of neem oil or a mild soap solution, ensuring you hit the undersides of the leaves.
