Jasminum Grandiflorum (Chameli)
The Chameli (Jasminum grandiflorum), also known as Spanish Jasmine or Royal Jasmine, is arguably the most beloved fragrance in Indian history. Highly prized for its exquisite essential oil, its starry white flowers are larger and more open than common jasmine varieties. The fragrance is rich, sweet, and intoxicating, peaking in the early morning hours. With its graceful, sprawling habit and delicate, feathery green leaves, Chameli is more than just a plant—it is a sensory experience that has defined Indian gardens, temple offerings, and perfumes for centuries.
Light
▾
Chameli loves the sun! It requires at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight to bloom profusely. While it can tolerate partial shade, the stems will become "leggy" and the number of flowers will decrease. In very hot regions, morning sun and light afternoon dappled shade is the perfect combination.
Watering
▾
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. During the peak of summer, it may need daily watering. Avoid overwatering during the monsoon, as soggy roots can quickly lead to leaf drop.
Soil & Fertilizer
▾
Prefers well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. A mix of garden soil, compost, and a bit of sand works well. Feed every 15–20 days with an organic liquid fertilizer or a handful of vermicompost during the growing season to keep the flowers coming.
Yellowing Leaves
▾
Usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure your pot has clear drainage holes. If the veins are green but the leaf is yellow, it may need a dose of iron or magnesium (Epsom salts).
Few or No Flowers
▾
This is almost always due to a lack of sunlight. Move the plant to a brighter spot. Also, ensure you aren't using too much nitrogen fertilizer, which makes leaves grow but stops flowers.
