Orange Flame Vine (Pyrostegia Venusta)
The Orange Flame Vine (Pyrostegia venusta), also known as the Golden Shower or Trumpet Creeper, is the ultimate "showstopper" for winter gardens. Native to Brazil, this vigorous evergreen climber is famous for its incredible winter bloom, where it literally smothers itself in dense, hanging clusters of vibrant orange trumpet-shaped flowers. The visual effect is so intense it often looks like the vine is on fire. With its lush green foliage and rapid growth rate, the Flame Vine is the perfect solution for covering large boundary walls, unsightly fences, or pergolas that need a dramatic floral roof.
Light
▾
Thrives in full sun. This vine requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight to bloom at its full potential. While it will grow in partial shade, the foliage will be thinner and the flower production will be significantly lower. For that "wall of fire" look, sun is non-negotiable.
Watering
▾
Water regularly when the plant is young. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. During the flowering season, keep the soil moderately moist to prolong the life of the blooms. Ensure the soil is well-drained, as it does not like "wet feet."
Soil & Fertilizer
▾
Adapts to most soil types but prefers rich, loamy soil. Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early summer to prepare the vine for its winter bloom. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers during the flowering months, as they will encourage leaves rather than flowers.
Foliage Growth but No Flowers
▾
This is almost always due to either too much shade or an excess of nitrogen fertilizer. Move the plant to a sunnier spot or switch to a phosphorus-heavy fertilizer in late summer.
Yellow Leaves in Summer
▾
The Flame Vine sometimes looks a bit stressed in the peak of the Indian summer. Ensure it has adequate water during dry spells and consider mulching the roots to keep them cool.
