The Orange Flame Vine (Pyrostegia venusta), also known as the Golden Shower or Trumpet Creeper, is the ultimate "showstopper" for winter gardens. Native to Brazil, this vigorous evergreen climber is famous for its incredible winter bloom, where it literally smothers itself in dense, hanging clusters of vibrant orange trumpet-shaped flowers. The visual effect is so intense it often looks like the vine is on fire. With its lush green foliage and rapid growth rate, the Flame Vine is the perfect solution for covering large boundary walls, unsightly fences, or pergolas that need a dramatic floral roof.

💡 The Winter Glow While most garden plants go dormant in the cooler months, the Orange Flame Vine is just getting started. In India, it typically begins its spectacular display in late autumn or early winter, blooming right through the start of spring. It is one of the few climbers that provides heavy color when the rest of the garden is quiet.
🌿 Superior Screening Power Thanks to its branched tendrils, the Flame Vine is a champion climber. It can easily scale vertical surfaces and spread horizontally with minimal help. If you need a fast, dense, and evergreen privacy screen that requires little maintenance once established, this is the plant for you.
☀️

Light

Thrives in full sun. This vine requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight to bloom at its full potential. While it will grow in partial shade, the foliage will be thinner and the flower production will be significantly lower. For that "wall of fire" look, sun is non-negotiable.

💧

Watering

Water regularly when the plant is young. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. During the flowering season, keep the soil moderately moist to prolong the life of the blooms. Ensure the soil is well-drained, as it does not like "wet feet."

🌱

Soil & Fertilizer

Adapts to most soil types but prefers rich, loamy soil. Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early summer to prepare the vine for its winter bloom. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers during the flowering months, as they will encourage leaves rather than flowers.

✂️ Pruning and Management This is a very fast-growing vine. To keep it under control and prevent it from becoming a tangled mess, prune it back hard after the flowering season ends (usually in late spring). This encourages new growth that will carry next year's flowers. It can be trained along wires or fences with ease.
⚠️ Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Foliage Growth but No Flowers

This is almost always due to either too much shade or an excess of nitrogen fertilizer. Move the plant to a sunnier spot or switch to a phosphorus-heavy fertilizer in late summer.

Yellow Leaves in Summer

The Flame Vine sometimes looks a bit stressed in the peak of the Indian summer. Ensure it has adequate water during dry spells and consider mulching the roots to keep them cool.

Care Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Light:

This plant thrives in full sun, meaning it requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ideal locations include south- or west-facing balconies, terraces, open gardens, or window sills that receive strong sunlight for most of the day.

Water:

Water deeply 2–3 times a week, depending on weather and soil type. Early morning or late evening is best. Increase frequency during peak summer or dry spells.

Growing Media:

30–40% Garden Soil/Loamy Soil: Provides structure, anchorage, and essential minerals.
20–30% Compost/FYM (well-rotted): Enriches the mix with organic matter and promotes healthy microbial activity.
20–30% Sand/Perlite: Improves drainage and aeration, especially important in pots.
10–20% Vermicompost: Supplies balanced, slow-release nutrients.

Optional: A handful of bone meal or neem cake for root development and pest resistance. This blend supports deep root growth, strong branching, and sustained health whether planted in pots or directly in the ground.

Feeding & Fertilization:

For these plants, use a phosphorus-rich liquid fertilizer (like 10-30-20 or similar) every 2–3 weeks during the blooming season to support healthy flowers. Dilute to half strength to avoid overfeeding.

Mix in a moderate amount of well-rotted compost or vermicompost every 4–6 weeks to improve soil fertility and encourage continuous blooming. Reduce or stop feeding during the off-season when flowering slows.
