The Philodendron Micans (Philodendron hederaceum var. micans, or the Velvet Leaf Philodendron) is an irresistible, tactile indoor classic celebrated for its heart-shaped foliage, shimmering iridescent sheen, and rich bronze-burgundy hues. Native to Central America and the Caribbean, this fast-growing vining aroid brings luxurious velvet texture and warm color to any indoor space.

Each heart-shaped leaf emerges in a radiant flush of coppery orange, amber, and rusty pink before maturing into a deep, light-trapping dark forest green. With rich burgundy-purple undersides and a fine surface nap that reflects ambient light like crushed velvet, this low-maintenance climber delivers effortless elegance.

Iridescent Velvet Sheen & Copper Tones The signature asset of 'Micans' is its plush, light-absorbing leaf surface. As ambient room light shifts, the coppery-bronze highlights and wine-red undersides shimmer with a warm, multi-dimensional luster that sets it apart from standard smooth-leaf vines.

Cascading Grace or Climbing Scale Whether styled to cascade in a dense velvet curtain from hanging planters and floating shelves, or trained upward along a moist moss pole to encourage larger, broader foliage, this vigorous grower fills out its space quickly and gracefully.

Caution: Toxic to Pets Like all premium members of the Philodendron family, 'Micans' contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or ingesting any part of the leaves or stems will cause immediate oral irritation, swelling, and digestive discomfort in dogs and cats. Keep it safely elevated out of reach.

Light & Color

▾

Requires consistent, bright indirect filtered light. Ample ambient lighting is essential to fuel the rich coppery-bronze tones and keep leaf node spacing tight and bushy. Protect it strictly from harsh direct afternoon sun, which will scorch the delicate velvet leaf surface.

Watering

▾

Allow the top 50% of the soil mixture to dry out fully before providing a thorough, deep drench. The root system thrives with good aeration and will suffer if kept in soggy, waterlogged potting medium. Always ensure excess water drains freely away from the pot base.

Soil & Humidity

▾

Adapts easily to standard household humidity (45% to 60%), though elevated humidity encourages faster growth and larger leaves. Pot it in an open, fast-draining aroid mix combining rich peat or coco coir heavily amended with coarse perlite, orchid bark, and horticultural charcoal.
