Platycerium Ridleyi is widely considered one of the rarest and most coveted staghorn ferns on the planet. Native to the high forest canopies of Borneo, Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and Peninsular Thailand, its deeply ridged, brain-like shield fronds and bold antler-shaped fertile fronds give it a sculptural quality unlike anything else in cultivation — less a houseplant, more living wall art.

In the wild, Ridleyi grows epiphytically in the upper canopy and has a fascinating relationship with ants, which colonise the hollow chambers of its shield fronds and provide nutrients in return. In cultivation, these plants live for many decades, growing more spectacular every year. At Soiled, we send healthy, well-established specimens ready to begin that journey in your space.

⚠️ Collector's Note — Please Read Before Buying Ridleyi is an advanced-care plant best suited to experienced growers. It is highly sensitive to overwatering, stagnant air, and hard tap water. This is not a set-and-forget houseplant — but the reward for getting it right is extraordinary.
☀️

Light

Bright indirect light — dappled canopy-style. Within 1–2 metres of a bright east or west-facing window indoors. Outdoors: 50–70% shade cloth or beneath a filtered canopy. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun. More light = faster, healthier growth.

💧

Watering

Soak the mount thoroughly, then allow the root zone to dry slightly before watering again. Never allow constant moisture — shield fronds trap water and rot sets in fast. Use rainwater or filtered water only; Ridleyi is highly sensitive to chlorine and minerals in tap water.

🌱

Growing Media

Never pot in regular soil. Mount on teak, cork bark, or Western Red Cedar with long-fibre sphagnum moss, coco husk chips, and a little perlite. Secure with 15–30 lb monofilament fishing line only — never cotton twine (rots) or copper wire (toxic to ferns).

🌾

Feeding & Fertilization

Light feeder. Tuck 3–5 slow-release granules (Osmocote 14-14-14) under shield fronds every 6 months. Or apply 20-20-20 at quarter strength monthly by misting the moss. Flush the mount occasionally to prevent salt buildup. Never over-fertilize — excess nitrogen distorts the plant's form.

🪵 Mounting & Airflow — The Most Critical Part

Airflow matters more than water for Ridleyi. In the wild it is drenched by rain then immediately dried by the canopy breeze — recreate this cycle and it thrives. Mount vertically with the growth bud at the 12 o'clock position so water drains away from the crown naturally. Run a gentle oscillating fan nearby at all times; high humidity with stagnant air is the fastest route to rot. Aim for 60–80% humidity. Never remove the brown shield fronds — they are alive, protecting the roots and storing moisture.

⚠️ Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Black or Soft Patches on Base

Root rot from overwatering or stagnant air. Reduce watering immediately and place an oscillating fan nearby to improve airflow.

Pale or Washed-Out Fronds

Too much direct sun or hard tap water mineral buildup. Switch to rainwater or filtered water and move to a softer, more indirect light position.

Weak or Floppy Frond Growth

Insufficient airflow. A gentle oscillating fan running nearby strengthens frond structure significantly — this is non-negotiable for Ridleyi.

Slow or Stalled Growth

Ridleyi is a naturally slow grower — each new frond is a milestone. Do not over-fertilize trying to speed things up. Check light and airflow first.

Scale Insects or Mealybugs

Apply diluted neem oil gently with a soft cloth. Never spray directly into the shield frond cups or onto the trichome-covered fertile fronds.
