Platycerium Superbum
Make a massive, unforgettable statement with the Platycerium 'Superbum'. Native to the rainforest canopies of Australia, this is truly a giant among staghorn ferns. It earns its 'Superbum' name (meaning superb or magnificent) by producing an absolutely enormous, dramatically lobed shield frond that fans outwards and upwards, creating a spectacular crown or "nest." Beneath this crown, pendulous, deeply forked fertile fronds gracefully cascade downward, making it the ultimate piece of living wall art.
Both the shield and fertile fronds are blanketed in a thick layer of fine, silvery-white hairs (trichomes), giving the entire plant a soft, frosted, sage-green appearance. Because it grows to such epic proportions, the Superbum requires a sturdy mount and becomes a breathtaking focal point in any bright indoor room, shaded patio, or greenhouse.
Light
▾
This fern thrives in bright, dappled, indirect light. A spot near an east-facing window receiving gentle morning sun is perfect. It can handle slightly brighter light than many other ferns due to its protective silvery trichomes, but you must avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which will scorch the fronds and turn them pale yellow.
Watering
▾
Wait until the sphagnum moss ball behind the shield frond feels crispy on the outside but slightly damp deep inside. When it's time to water, take the mounted fern down and submerge the moss and the back of the board in room-temperature water for 15-20 minutes. Let it drip dry completely. Because of the giant "nest" shape, you can also gently pour water directly into the top of the shield frond crown!
Humidity & Airflow
▾
While they appreciate moderate to high humidity (50%+), excellent airflow is non-negotiable for a Superbum. Because the massive shield fronds hold a lot of moisture against the mount, stagnant air will quickly lead to fungal rot. Ensure the room is well-ventilated, especially after watering.
Growing Media
▾
Staghorn ferns are epiphytes (they grow on trees). The Superbum must be mounted on a heavy-duty, rot-resistant board (like cedar), cork bark, or tree fern fiber, with its root system packed in a large mound of premium long-fiber sphagnum moss. Ensure your mount and hanging wire are strong, as mature specimens become very heavy!
Feeding
▾
Feed during the active spring and summer months. You can dissolve a balanced liquid fertilizer at 1/4 strength into your watering basin. Alternatively, mimic nature: you can toss a few slow-release fertilizer pellets, or even a piece of a banana peel, directly into the top "nest" of the shield fronds to slowly break down and feed the plant!
Black, Mushy Base / Smelling of Rot
▾
This indicates severe overwatering and poor airflow. If the moss stays constantly wet, the base of the massive shield frond will rot. You must allow the moss to dry out significantly between waterings and ensure there is adequate air circulation around the mount.
Drooping, Limp Fertile Fronds
▾
If the lower, cascading "antlers" look greyish, limp, and feel paper-thin, the plant is dehydrated. Check the moss ball—if it is completely bone dry, immediately give the mount a deep, 20-minute soak. The fronds will plump back up within 24 to 48 hours.
Losing the Silvery Coating
▾
The fine, silvery-white fuzz (trichomes) on the leaves protects the plant and helps it absorb moisture. Never wipe or rub the leaves! Oils from your skin and mechanical rubbing will permanently destroy these delicate hairs, leaving bald, green patches that are more susceptible to sunburn.
