Trichocereus Bridgesii var. monstrose (Penis Cactus)
The Trichocereus bridgesii var. monstrose, more commonly known as the Penis Cactus, is one of the most unique and sought-after cultivars in the succulent world. This "monstrose" mutation causes the plant to grow in short, smooth, cylindrical segments that lack the traditional ribs found on most cacti, resulting in its iconic and unmistakable silhouette.
Native to the high deserts of Bolivia, this slow-growing cactus is prized by collectors for its sculptural form and its glaucous, blue-green skin. It is a hardy, resilient plant that makes a bold statement in any modern interior or rock garden.
Light
▾Thrives in full sun to very bright indirect light. To maintain its compact shape and blue-green color, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. If grown indoors, a South-facing window is essential to prevent the plant from stretching.
Watering
▾Like most desert cacti, it is highly sensitive to overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out 100% between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly, only providing enough moisture to keep the plant from shriveling.
Soil & Potting
▾Requires a very gritty, fast-draining mineral mix. A blend of 50% pumice or perlite with 50% cactus soil is ideal. Ensure the pot has large drainage holes; terracotta pots are highly recommended as they help the soil dry out faster.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Feed sparingly during the growing season (Spring/Summer) with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can cause the skin to split or lead to weak, unnatural growth.
Maintenance & Propagation
▾This cactus requires almost zero pruning. Propagation is easily done via stem cuttings. Simply "snap" off a segment at the joint, allow it to callus for 1-2 weeks in a dry spot, and then place it on top of dry gritty soil until roots emerge.
Black Spots or Mushy Base
▾This is a sign of root rot due to overwatering or high humidity. Stop watering immediately and check the roots. You may need to cut away the rot and re-root the healthy upper segments.
Skin Splitting
▾Usually caused by a sudden, heavy watering after a long dry spell. To avoid this, water more consistently but in smaller amounts, and ensure the soil is truly dry before adding more.
