Variegated Strings of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii)
The Variegated String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii f. variegata) is a dreamy, trailing succulent that is a must-have for any interior aesthetic. This rare variation of the standard Rosary Vine features thick, heart-shaped leaves splashed with creamy white and silver variegation. Under bright light, the edges of the leaves blush a beautiful rosy pink.
Native to South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, this plant is incredibly resilient. Its vines can grow several feet long, making it a perfect choice for hanging baskets or high shelves where its delicate "chains of hearts" can cascade freely.
Light
▾Thrives in very bright, indirect light. Bright light is crucial to maintain the variegation and trigger the "pink blush" on the leaves. It can handle a small amount of soft morning sun, but avoid harsh midday rays which can burn the foliage.
Watering
▾Treat this plant like a succulent. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely (about 90%) between waterings. The leaves will feel slightly soft or flexible when the plant is thirsty. Always avoid letting the "tuber" at the base sit in soggy soil.
Soil & Potting
▾Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A blend of potting soil with plenty of perlite, pumice, or coarse sand works best. They prefer to be slightly root-bound, so don't rush to repot into a large container.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Feed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. No fertilizer is needed during the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.
Propagation
▾You can propagate via the "Butterfly Method" (leaf cuttings), stem cuttings in water, or by pressing the aerial tubers into moist soil. They are fast rooters and highly rewarding to grow from scratch!
Yellowing Leaves near the Base
▾Usually a sign of overwatering. Ensure you are letting the soil dry out thoroughly. If the stems feel mushy, it may be root rot; take healthy cuttings immediately to save the plant.
Small Leaves / Large Gaps
▾This is "etiolation," caused by insufficient light. The plant is stretching to find a light source. Move it to a brighter location to encourage tighter, heart-shaped growth.
