Abutilon 'Tiger Eye' - Flowering Maple
Abutilon 'Tiger Eye' is one of the most visually arresting varieties of Flowering Maple. Its large, pendulous lanterns are a rich golden-apricot, etched with an intricate network of deep red-orange veins that resemble the markings of a tiger. This "painted" effect makes every bloom a masterpiece.
Maintaining a relatively tidy, upright habit, 'Tiger Eye' produces a profusion of flowers against a backdrop of soft, velvety green foliage. It is a vigorous grower and an excellent choice for adding a touch of the exotic to your balcony, patio, or bright living room.
Light
▾Thrives in bright, indirect light. It enjoys a few hours of soft morning sun, but should be protected from harsh midday sun in Indian climates. High light levels encourage more frequent and larger blooms.
Watering
▾Keep the soil consistently moist. 'Tiger Eye' has high water needs, especially when blooming. If the soil dries out completely, the plant will wilt quickly. Never let it sit in a saucer of stagnant water.
Soil & Potting
▾Requires a well-draining, fertile potting mix. A combination of peat moss, perlite, and well-rotted compost is ideal. Repot every 1-2 years as the plant can become root-bound quickly due to its vigorous growth.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Because 'Tiger Eye' is an ever-bloomer, it needs constant fuel. Use a balanced NPK (19-19-19) every 14 days during the growing season. A phosphorus-rich fertilizer will enhance the intensity of the red veining.
Pruning & Shaping
▾Pinch off the growing tips of young stems regularly to encourage branching and prevent "legginess." You can hard-prune in early spring to maintain a specific size; it flowers on new wood and will bounce back fast.
Dropping Flower Buds
▾Usually caused by extreme temperature fluctuations or the soil drying out. Ensure consistent watering and keep the plant away from AC vents.
Small or Pale Flowers
▾Often a sign of insufficient light or lack of nutrients. Move to a brighter spot and resume a regular fertilization schedule.
Mealybugs or Whiteflies
▾Inspect the undersides of leaves regularly. Treat any infestation early with Neem oil or a mild insecticidal soap spray.
