The Alocasia 'Flying Squid' is easily one of the most bizarre, avant-garde, and wonderfully eccentric oddities in the entire plant kingdom. This ultra-rare miniature hybrid completely throws out the traditional concept of broad Elephant Ear leaves, opting instead for a wildly minimalist, abstract silhouette that looks like a tiny sea creature frozen in motion.
Instead of wide blades, this collector's gem produces a tight cluster of thin, wiry, dark burgundy-green stems that twist, loop, and arch in all directions. The actual leaves are reduced to tiny, comical green points or hooks at the very tips of these squiggly petioles. Standing at a maximum height of just 6 to 8 inches, it acts as a fascinating, conversational living sculpture for micro-spaces.
Bizarre Tentacle-Like Stems
The defining charm of the Flying Squid is its wild, calligraphic structure. The dark, squiggly stems curl outward like the tentacles of an inverted squid, making it an absolute must-have for lovers of weird, botanical anomalies.
Ultra-Compact Curiosity Footprint
With its tiny maturity size, this miniature marvel never dominates a room. It fits beautifully into modern desktop setups, micro-terrariums, fairy gardens, or specialized plant shelves where its detailed, abstract frame can be appreciated up close.
Caution: Toxic to Pets
Like all premium members of the Alocasia family, the Flying Squid contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or swallowing any part of the wiry stems will cause immediate oral burning, swelling, and sharp digestive distress in dogs and cats. Keep it safely elevated.
Light
▾
Requires consistent, bright, indirect filtered light to sustain its active stem development and preserve its rich burgundy undertones. Avoid dark corners, which will cause the plant to drop stems, and protect it strictly from direct afternoon solar rays to prevent bleaching.
Watering
▾
Allow the top 60% to 75% of the potting medium to dry out fully before watering very lightly. Because this plant has almost zero leaf surface area, its rate of transpiration (water evaporation through leaves) is exceptionally low. Overwatering will rot its tiny rhizome within days. When in doubt, keep it dry.
Soil & Humidity
▾
Thrives best in elevated humidity environments (60% or higher) to prevent the delicate, wiry tips from crisping up. It demands an exceptionally porous, chunky, fast-draining potting substrate. Always use a loose blend heavily amended with orchid bark, coarse perlite, and pumice.
