The Blue Iridescent Fern (Microsorum siamensis) is a rare and visually enchanting fern prized for its soft blue-green iridescence that shimmers subtly under indirect light. Native to Southeast Asia, this epiphytic fern is admired for its calm elegance rather than bold growth, making it a perfect choice for collectors who appreciate refined, textural foliage.

Unlike common green ferns, Microsorum siamensis displays a silky, metallic glow that shifts with lighting and humidity. Compact and slow-growing, it thrives in stable indoor environments, terrariums, and shaded balconies where humidity is naturally higher.

Care Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Light:

This plant thrives in bright indirect light, which means it needs a well-lit space without harsh direct sunlight. Ideal locations include east or north-facing windows, or spots near south or west-facing windows with filtered light through a sheer curtain to protect its foliage.

Water:

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering & ensure pots have drainage holes. Frequency may vary with season and light, roughly once every 5–10 days.

Growing Media:

30–40% Coco Coir/Peat Moss: Maintains consistent moisture without becoming soggy.
20–30% Perlite/Pumice: Improves aeration and prevents waterlogging.
20–30% Leaf Compost/Orchid Bark (fine): Mimics forest floor conditions and adds organic matter.
10–20% Vermicompost: Provides slow-release nutrients to support lush foliage.
Optional: A handful of horticultural charcoal to keep the mix fresh and prevent fungal issues.

Feeding & Fertilization:

Feed once every 4–6 weeks during active growth using a very diluted liquid fertilizer (¼ to ½ strength). Avoid heavy feeding—this fern prefers minimal nutrition. Stop feeding during winter.
