Carolina Jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens) is a beautiful evergreen to semi-evergreen flowering climber, best known for its bright yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers and sweet, intoxicating fragrance. Native to the southeastern United States, this elegant vine is widely admired for its ability to cover trellises, fences, pergolas, and balconies with lush green foliage and seasonal blooms.

Flowering mainly from late winter to spring, Carolina Jasmine fills the air with fragrance at a time when few other climbers are in bloom. Its glossy, narrow leaves provide year-round greenery, while the cascading yellow flowers create a cheerful, sunlit display.

This climber is easy to grow in Indian conditions when given sunlight, good drainage, and light support—making it a favourite for ornamental gardens and outdoor spaces.

Care Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Light:

This plant thrives in bright indirect light, which means it needs a well-lit space without harsh direct sunlight. Ideal locations include east or north-facing windows, or spots near south or west-facing windows with filtered light through a sheer curtain to protect its foliage.

Water:

Water deeply 2–3 times a week, depending on weather and soil type. Early morning or late evening is best. Increase frequency during peak summer or dry spells.

Feeding & Fertilization:

For these plants, use a phosphorus-rich liquid fertilizer (like 10-30-20 or similar) every 2–3 weeks during the blooming season to support healthy flowers. Dilute to half strength to avoid overfeeding.

Mix in a moderate amount of well-rotted compost or vermicompost every 4–6 weeks to improve soil fertility and encourage continuous blooming. Reduce or stop feeding during the off-season when flowering slows.
