Carolina Jasmine (Gelsemium Sempervirens)
Carolina Jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens) is a beloved evergreen vine prized for its cascades of butter-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. In early spring, this vigorous climber transforms into a wall of gold, releasing a sweet, honey-like fragrance that can fill an entire garden or balcony space.
Despite its delicate, star-like blooms, it is a tough and resilient plant. Its slender, wiry stems naturally twine around supports, making it an ideal choice for covering unsightly fences, sprawling over pergolas, or being trained up a trellis in a sunny corner. Its glossy, dark green foliage remains beautiful year-round, even when the plant is not in bloom.
Light
▾Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the most prolific flowering, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. While it can grow in shadier spots, the vine will be less dense and produce fewer yellow trumpets.
Watering
▾Requires regular watering during its first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. In containers, water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.
Soil & Potting
▾Prefers rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. A mix of garden soil, coco-peat, and compost works perfectly. If growing in a pot, ensure it has large drainage holes and is deep enough for the roots to expand.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (like 19-19-19) once a month during the growing season. In late winter, just before the blooming season starts, a phosphorus-rich "Bloom Booster" will help maximize the flower count.
Pruning & Training
▾Since it is a twining vine, provide a support structure early. Prune immediately after the flowering period ends to maintain its shape and control its size. Light tip-pruning during the summer can encourage bushier growth.
Yellowing Leaves / Sparse Growth
▾Usually a sign of insufficient sunlight or lack of nutrients. Move the plant to a brighter location and check if it needs a fresh dose of organic compost or fertilizer.
Buds Not Opening
▾Often caused by extreme temperature fluctuations or dry soil during the bud-forming stage. Ensure consistent watering when the plant starts to show flower buds.
