Care Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Light:

This plant thrives in bright indirect light, which means it needs a well-lit space without harsh direct sunlight. Ideal locations include east or north-facing windows, or spots near south or west-facing windows with filtered light through a sheer curtain to protect its foliage.

Water:

They love moisture. Keep the soil consistently damp but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during hot weather. They thrive in wet, boggy conditions and can even grow in shallow water.

Growing Media:

Colocasia thrives in a bog-like medium that stays consistently moist. Use a pot without a drainage hole to retain water; if the pot has a hole, you’ll need to water more frequently.

Start by adding 2–3 inches of vermicompost at the base—Colocasia are heavy feeders and benefit from this nutrient boost. Then, fill the rest of the pot with garden/clay soil, leaving about 2 inches at the top to hold water.

You may optionally mix some rice husk or additional vermicompost into the garden soil to improve fertility and moisture retention, but it’s not mandatory. This setup mimics the plant’s natural habitat and promotes lush, vigorous growth.

Feeding & Fertilization:

For these plants, use a balanced or slightly nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer (like 20-10-20) every 2 weeks during the growing season, especially in warm, humid months. They are heavy feeders and thrive with regular nourishment.

Incorporate rich compost or vermicompost into the soil once every 4–6 weeks to maintain fertility and support their large, lush foliage. Reduce feeding in cooler months when growth slows.
