The Medinilla Scortechinii, universally known as the Orange Coral Medinilla, is an extraordinary exotic showstopper. Native to the montane rainforests of Malaysia, this rare epiphytic shrub is highly coveted for its spectacular, architectural flowering structures that mimic vibrant sea coral.
While most indoor plants hide their stems, this variety commands attention with bright, neon-orange panicles that contrast brilliantly against a dense backdrop of thick, waxy, deep-green evergreen foliage. It offers an incredible, sculptural jungle aesthetic for sophisticated plant collectors and high-humidity spaces.
Architectural Coral Blooms The defining asset of this rare Medinilla is its long-lasting flowering spikes. The intensely vivid orange stems and tiny matching buds emerge in large clusters, maintaining their brilliant coral-like color for months at a time.
100% Pet-Safe and Non-Toxic Unlike many rare tropical imports and standard aroids, the Orange Coral Medinilla is completely non-toxic. The thick foliage, waxy stems, and bright blossoms are entirely safe around curious cats and dogs.
Epiphytic Roots: No Heavy Soil! In the wild, this plant grows nestled in the branches of trees, not in heavy ground mud. Its fleshy root system requires massive amounts of oxygen. Never plant it in dense potting soil, or the roots will rapidly suffocate.
Light▾
Requires bright, filtered, indirect light to fuel its continuous flowering cycles. An east-facing window or a spot pulled back from a bright south/west window is ideal. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which will instantly scorch and bleach the waxy foliage.
Watering▾
Allow the top 30-50% of the potting medium to dry out before watering thoroughly. Its semi-succulent stems store water, making it surprisingly resilient to short dry spells. Ensure water drains away instantly; avoid leaving the container sitting in stagnant water.
Soil & Humidity▾
Thrives beautifully in high humidity (60%+) and a strictly chunky, airy medium. Use an open mix of coarse orchid bark, perlite, horticultural charcoal, and long-fiber sphagnum moss to mimic its natural tree-canopy habitat.
