Yesterday Today Tomorrow Plant (Brunfelsia Pauciflora)
Few plants tell a story quite like the Yesterday Today Tomorrow Plant (Brunfelsia Pauciflora). Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, it earns its poetic name from one of the most enchanting blooming behaviours in the plant kingdom — each flower opens a deep, rich violet-purple, fades to soft lavender the next day, then turns almost pure white by the third. At any given time, all three colours appear simultaneously on the same plant, creating a living gradient of purple, mauve, and white that is genuinely unlike anything else in a garden or on a balcony.
Beyond its colour-changing magic, this compact evergreen shrub is also beautifully fragrant — the blooms carry a sweet, subtle perfume that intensifies in the evening. It grows as a bushy, well-branched shrub reaching 1–3 metres outdoors, or a manageable 60–90 cm in a pot with regular pruning. It thrives in India's tropical and subtropical climate and blooms most prolifically from spring through summer (March to August), with the possibility of a second flush in early winter in warmer southern regions.
Light
▾
Bright indirect light to partial sun — 4–6 hours of gentle direct sunlight daily is ideal. Morning sun with afternoon shade works beautifully in Indian summers. A south or east-facing spot is perfect. Too much harsh midday sun bleaches the blooms and scorches the leaves; too much shade and flowering reduces significantly.
Watering
▾
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Water deeply and thoroughly each time rather than shallow frequent watering. Reduce frequency in winter when growth slows. Good drainage is essential — root rot is the most common issue with this plant.
Growing Media
▾
Well-draining, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil — pH 5.5–6.5. Mix 40% garden soil, 30% compost or well-rotted FYM, 20% coco peat, and 10% perlite or coarse sand. For pots, use a good quality potting mix with extra perlite for drainage. Repot every 2 years or when rootbound. Mulch the base to retain moisture.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or 20-20-20 at half strength) every 2–3 weeks during the growing and flowering season. Once buds begin forming, switch to a phosphorus-rich bloom booster (e.g. 10-30-10) to intensify flowering. Top-dress with vermicompost or well-rotted compost every 2–3 months. Stop feeding in winter.
✂️ Pruning for More Blooms
Brunfelsia blooms on new growth — so pruning directly encourages more flowers. Pinch out the growing tips of young plants throughout the season to encourage a bushy, multi-branched shape. After the main flowering flush, trim lightly to tidy the shape. In spring, cut back up to half of the previous year's growth on established plants to rejuvenate them and trigger a vigorous new blooming season. Never skip the post-flower prune — it is the single most effective thing you can do to keep this plant flowering abundantly year after year.
No Flowers or Very Few Blooms
▾
Usually insufficient light or too much nitrogen. Move to a brighter spot with morning sun and switch to a phosphorus-rich bloom fertilizer. Also check if pruning has been neglected — Brunfelsia blooms on new growth.
Yellow Leaves
▾
Overwatering or soil pH too high (alkaline). Check drainage and let soil dry slightly between waterings. If soil pH is above 7.0, amend with sulfur or use an acidic fertilizer. Iron deficiency can also cause yellowing — apply chelated iron as a foliar spray.
Leaf Drop
▾
Normal in cooler months — Brunfelsia is semi-deciduous and may drop some leaves in winter. If leaf drop occurs in summer, check for root rot (overwatering) or sudden temperature changes like cold drafts or air conditioning.
Aphids or Whiteflies
▾
Spray the entire plant — including leaf undersides — with diluted neem oil solution every 7–10 days until resolved. In severe cases, use insecticidal soap. Improve air circulation around the plant to discourage re-infestation.
Root Rot
▾
From overwatering or poor drainage. Remove the plant from the pot, trim away any black or mushy roots, dust with fungicide powder, and repot in fresh well-draining mix. Improve drainage and reduce watering going forward.
